Kurt Vonnegut – “if I should ever die, God forbid, let this be my epitaph: ‘The only proof he needed for the existence of God was music.’”
An interesting article today in the New York Times opinion section hints at the same thing, I think. Sam Philips’ piece, “The Space to Imagine Music,”explores the idea of finding music in the visual arts. It’s a useful reminder – the creation of music is not all about lines on a page, or even the musings of one’s own soul, but instead our music is shaped by every sense and experience. And what is beautiful in a painting or a sculpture, or in nature, has the same beauty when applied musically.
